Back in the early days, death metal had many infants. And out of them all, its Finnish variation proved to be one of its most monstruous, cavernous and truly evil sounding roar still echoes to this very day and bands like CONVULSE, ABHORRENCE, DEMIGOD, DEMILICH or RIPPIKOULU are still revered (feared?) by all of those who followed them. Albeit on a different level and with different approaches, both ANATOMIA and PURULENCY have long acknowledged how important – fuck, VITAL – some of those early 90s crude recordings like ‘Spring Of Recovery’, ‘Slumber Of Sullen Eyes’ or ‘Children Of The Scorn’ played a big role building their own musical identity.

In a way, this split EP is way more than a simple tribute. ANATOMIA and PURULENCY aren’t ‘just’ covering respectively FUNEBRE’s ‘Brainspoon’ and AMORPHIS ‘Pilgrimage From Darkness’, they’re transcending them. While ANATOMIA managed to turn an already supra-heavy and down-tuned classic which first appeared on the 1989 Cranial Torment demo into a even doomier and gut-twisting eight minutes plus procession, PURULENCY prove here that it is possible to recreate the opening track of the ‘Privilege Of Evil’ EP while pushing the bleak element to the max.

This unique release goes as far as using a cover by cult Finnish Toni Hietomaa (ROTPIT, CADAVER INCUBATOR) referring to the originals’ artwork, in all its black and white beauty. The past is alive!

The ANATOMIA / PURULENCY Split 7-inch is a tribute to two seminal Finnish bands Funebre and Amorphis that were widely regarded as the forefront of Finnish Death Metal during the 90s.
ANATOMIA’s cover of ‘Brainspoon’ was taken off from Funebre’s 1989 “Cranial Torment” demo while the PURULENCY side was taken off from Amorphis’ “Privilege Of Evil” EP in 1993.
ANATOMIA’s recording of ‘Brainspoon’ was recorded between sessions at Studio Whiteness and Premuto Studio with mixing and mastering duties by Inari at Void Lab.
PURULENCY’s recording of ‘Pilgrimage From Darkness’ was recorded at several sessions between Classic Recording Studio for guitars/drums and respective home studios for vocals and bass. Mixing and mastering was helmed by Colin Masterson.
