the 1989 Canadian thrash metal classic is back, remastered and reissued!
This progressive thrash metal album from 1989 is a must-know for any ’80s thrasher.
‘Universe’ defies expectations because it is not just two different albums, but two different bands. The story goes that a Canadian thrash band, following in the footsteps of D.R.I. and C.O.C., was apparently forced by an unusually harsh winter to spend an extended period in their practice space, where they developed new instrumental prowess.
Many of the speed/thrash bands from the mid-80s (Destruction, Deathrow, Living Death, Voivod, etc.) stopped to consider whether they really liked the primal noise they were producing, or if they could create more engaging and challenging music. Our ‘brain donors’ here were one of them. It’s not that their energetic, uplifting thrash/crossover debut was weak by any means; they just knew they could contribute more fully to the overall expansion of the universe within the metal boundaries.
The word ‘auteurs’ is the perfect choice here to describe the unique approach to music employed in this ‘universal’ opus. In a manner quite reminiscent of Voivod’s last two albums, the delivery transcends the borders of thrash metal and embarks on a journey around the progressive metal kaleidoscope, breaking free from rigid conventions. The experimentation is less ostentatious than that found in the works of their compatriots, as thrash metal is still featured prominently, giving the complex mosaics a nice, dynamic flavour and a more belligerent edge. The thrash metal fanbase would be bemused by what the band has produced here, and bewildered faces would not be an isolated phenomenon in the crowd. On the other hand, it is impossible to tire of it as the whole panorama clocks in at under 40 minutes, and everything flows quite smoothly and effortlessly with an airy, spaced-out feel.
Speaking of which, there was certainly more room for eccentricity and eclecticism in this exciting, amorphous musical formula. However, while the audience were anticipating the bands version of Nothingface or No More Colour, they announced the end of their time in the music industry.
